Man opened fire at 2 women in Mokena, police say

Women declined to help man with truck, police said

A Joliet man shot at two women who declined to help him free his truck after it got stuck in the the mud, police said.

The investigation of the incident that led to the arrest of Christopher Haramija, 36, of the 900 block of Longwood Drive began shortly before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Deputies responded at that time to a report of shots fired in the 1200 block of Whisper Creek Way in Mokena and were notified that a witness heard about nine shots in the field behind their residence, Hoffmeyer said.

The witness also saw a man without a shirt in the area of the creek bed, Hoffmeyer said.

Deputies walked to the creek and saw a vehicle that was stuck, Hoffmeyer said. While deputies were establishing a perimeter, they received information that two women in their mid-20s reported they were walking near the creek when they saw a Nissan Xterra stuck in the mud, she said.

A man approached the women and asked for help to get his truck out of the mud, Hoffmeyer said.

“The (women) stated that they wouldn’t help him, at which time the male pulled out a firearm and fired (four to six) shots in the girls direction and into the nearby tree line,” Hoffmeyer said.

Deputies attempted without success to find the man but were able to identify him through the vehicle registration number and from the description provided by the two women, Hoffmeyer said.

Deputies located, detained and questioned Haramija, Hoffmeyer said.

“Haramija was argumentative with deputies and denied shooting a firearm,” Hoffmeyer said.

Haramija was taken into custody on probable cause of discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Online court records did not show any charges filed yet against Haramija as of Wednesday. He was taken to jail and was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
