It’s been several years in the making, but District 202 will finally meet a “longstanding community priority” this August by implementing a full-day kindergarten program, a news release from the district said.
All District 202 elementary schools will offer the program, including the 18th school – Wallin Oaks – which is expected to open in August, the release said.
The full-day kindergarten program will include the following: math, oral language reading, science, social studies and writing, along with intervention support and “explore extensions,” the release said.
Explore extension time will include fine motor skills, literacy and math, as well and play-based activities to support social and emotional learning.
Full-day kindergarten will also include the following on a daily basis: art, music, or physical education.
By contrast, the half-day kindergarten program will have a reduced schedule. The half-day program will include instruction in reading, writing, and math.
All schools may not offer a half-day kindergarten program, which is enrollment dependent. Parents should contact the administrator at the school their child will attend for more information.
The first day of school for all kindergarten students is Aug. 18.
