Joliet hires new police chief

Joliet has hired William Evans, who served as a lieutenant with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, as the new police chief.

Evans was with the Cook County Sheriff’s police for nearly 25 years, according to information from the city.

He most recently was an area watch commander supervising sergeants and patrol officers in the southern portion of the county. He also has experience leading SWAT assignments and created training programs for regional SWAT teams.

Evans most recently has been with the U.S. Department of Defense at the National Security Agency, as well as working in corporate security management and training.

The website for Vector Solutions said Evans is retired from the sheriff’s department.

Evans replaces interim Chief Robert Brown, who replaced Police Chief Dawn Malec.

City Manager James Capparelli promoted Malec in January 2021, making her the first woman to hold the position of Joliet Police Chief in the history of the city of Joliet. Capparelli then fired Malec in October before realizing he was unable to do so, and could only demote her back to her previous rank of lieutenant.
