State Sen. Rachel Ventura has been appointed to serve as chair of the Illinois Senate Human Rights Committee.
“It is an honor to be entrusted with chairing the Human Rights Committee. I am deeply committed to advancing policies that address systemic inequities, including those rooted in socioeconomic disparities, while upholding the dignity of every individual,” Ventura, a Democrat from Joliet, said in a news release announcing her appointment.
The Senate Human Rights Committee plays a crucial role in addressing issues related to civil rights, social justice and anti-discrimination measures within the state.
As chair, Ventura said she will lead efforts to evaluate proposed legislation and collaborate with advocacy groups and stakeholders to tackle pressing challenges, according to the release.
Since joining the Illinois Senate, Ventura has supported measures related to workers’ rights, gender equity, mental health access and racial justice. Her legislative accomplishments include reforms in criminal justice, tenant rights and environmental protection.
“I am committed to addressing systemic inequities in housing, health care and the rights of vulnerable populations, including children,” Ventura said in the release.
She will chair the committee for the entirety of the 104th General Assembly.
Ventura served as vice chair of the Senate Special Committee on Pensions during the 103rd General Assembly.
