U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger continued his pointed criticisms of President Donald Trump and his allies for claiming without evidence that massive voter fraud led to Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 general election.
Kinzinger, R-Channahon, posted a video on his congressional Facebook page to dispel the misinformation being spread by the president and some Republican politicians.
“He’s currently trying to discredit the election results through falsehoods and conspiracies,” Kinzinger said in the video.
The Republican congressman has more vocally called out Trump as he’s continued to claim voter fraud.
Kinzinger also acknowledged that some of his fellow Republicans are going along with Trump’s false assertions out of a political calculation and fear of retribution from the president’s supporters.
“I choose to lead without fear,” he said.
Then, when audio of Trump’s call urging the Georgia secretary of state to “find” him votes was released, Kinzinger described the president’s words as “absolutely appalling.” Kinzinger argued that any Republicans intending to object to the election results could not do so “with a clean conscience” in light of the audio being made public.
In speaking out, Kinzinger also has been urging his fellow Republicans to stand up to the president as he has. He’s used the hashtag #RestoreOurGOP on Twitter.
“As public servants, we have a responsibility to serve in good faith,” he said in the video. “Purporting falsehoods is dangerously irresponsible, and it’s just plain wrong.”
