Plainfield Village Board approves Riverfront Master Plan

Development of two-mile stretch of DuPage River with amenities, pathways will take place over the next decade

The Plainfield Village Board last week approved its long-awaited, multi-faceted plan to develop a two-mile stretch of the DuPage riverfront and add several amenities for visitors.

The village published the Riverfront Master Plan on its website, detailing each phase of development over the next decade, according to the document.

“The goal is to utilize that land the best we can for people to enjoy it,” said Plainfield Village Trustee Margie Bonuchi, who is also running for mayor in April’s election.

The plan calls for the expansion of flooding mitigation and using “sensitive construction methods” with educational and recreational benefits.

The village aims to identify existing uses of the riverfront desired by residents, link gaps in pedestrian pathways, and install natural landscaping, among many other goals.

Village officials, along with their local partners, developed the plan through multiple phases including site analysis, community input, and consultant feedback on designs. Finally, the conceptual plan was presented to the public and the Village Board for further input.

The master plan is divided up to focus on three distinct parts of the riverfront, a northern, central and southern part of the two-mile stretch. The plan details the various prospective amenities and programming of each section of the riverfront.

The village will continue work on the plan in the years ahead along with the help of state and federal funding, the Riverfront Foundation, other area entities and local donors.
