Quick-thinking 17-year-old helps resident, dog escape

An unknown number of small pets died in a house fire in the 3500 block of Holly Lane in unincorporated Joliet on Saturday.

The Plainfield Fire Protection District was dispatched at 11:38 p.m.

One resident went back inside to rescue a dog before the firefighters arrived, but smoke and fire conditions caused the resident to head to the second floor. The resident’s 17-year-old son brought a ladder so the resident could escape with the dog, according to a news release from the district.

When firefighters arrived, they found a fire in the basement that had extended to the upper floors, according to the release.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within 20 minutes but remained on scene for about three hours while they checked for hot spots. The house is uninhabitable. The fire is under investigation, according to the release.

Assisting at the scene were firefighters from the Joliet, Lockport, Troy, Minooka, Naperville, Channahon and Oswego fire departments.

Three occupants of the home were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the release.

The Aurora Township, Bolingbrook, Coal City, Homer and Rockdale fire departments provided station coverage for additional calls while Plainfield firefighters were on the scene.
