The village of Plainfield is seeking residents to serve on its Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals.
Plan Commissioners attend up to two meetings per month to review development proposals and requests for variances from the village’s zoning code, according to a news release.
The Plan Commission meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Special meetings and joint meetings with the mayor and Board of Trustees may be called on occasion.
After receiving information, including staff reports, plans, traffic studies and often visiting the site of a proposed development or variance request, commissioners hear a summary of the staff report and additional testimony from the applicant at meetings. Commissioners vote to make recommendations to the mayor and Board of Trustees.
Interested Plainfield residents are encouraged to review previous meetings and agendas of the commission on the village website, plainfield-il.org. Recent meetings have ben held via Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic, but will soon resume in person at the Plainfield Village Hall, according to the release.
The village said commissioners are required to have an open mind, understand the village’s Comprehensive Plan and apply individual judgement in the public interest while fostering an intellectual and factual examination of the issues with other commissioners in a public setting.
A background in a field related to planning and development, such as architecture, engineering, environmental science, or the like, is helpful but not necessary to have.
The position entails about five to 10 hours per month including attending meetings and preparation in advance. Commissioners are expected to attend most meetings.
Residents interested in applying should submit their letter of interest and a brief professional resume by July 31 to Mayor John Argoudelis at the Village of Plainfield, 24401 W. Lockport St., Plainfield, Ill. 60544. Materials can be sent via email to mgibas@goplainfield.com.
