Diageo announced a major expansion this week of its footprint in Plainfield.

The company said it’s opening a new facility with the capacity to produce more than 25 million cases of malt-based beverages and spirits-based ready-to-drink cocktails, according to a news release. The manufacturing site features two high-speed can lines.

Michael L. Nelson Jr., the senior vice president of manufacturing and distillation for Diageo North America, said the new facility allows the company to “leverage synergies” with its warehouse and bottling operation already in Plainfield.

“We’re incredibly proud of the speed and innovative approach from our team and partners in their efforts to build this site in record time,” Nelson said in a statement.” Diageo Lincolnway will be instrumental in accelerating our offerings in the convenience space and help meet consumer demand.”

The new facility is producing some of Diageo’s latest brands and innovations including Smirnoff seltzers and spirits-based ready-to-drink cocktails like Crown Royal and Ketal One Botanical Vodka Spritz.

“The new canning facility will enhance Diageo’s existing operations, strengthening our offering and accelerating our strategy in the ready-to-drink category,” Keara Funck, Diageo, North America’s vice president of convenience, said in the release. “As we continue to build on this opportunity in the convenience space to deliver premium delicious bar-quality cocktails and malt-based beverages, we are excited about the innovations and possibilities this could bring to our consumers.”

Diageo said it has invested about $110 million in its new facility, which employs 50 full-time workers. The company first opened its Plainfield bottling site in 1966. It’s since expanded its presence in the village to employ more than 600 people.

“Diageo is an integral part of Plainfield’s economic life, providing jobs and tax revenue,” Plainfield Mayor John Argoudelis said in a statement. “We look forward to their continued and increased role in our Village.”
