Lincoln-Way District 210 earns grants to create bereavement support plan

The district cites research showing unresolved grief can negatively impact children in the classroom

The Lincoln-Way District 210 offices are seen Thursday at Lincoln-Way Central High School in New Lenox.

All three Lincoln-Way High School District 210 schools have received the designation of a “Grief-Sensitive School” by the New York Life Foundation.

Each school is receiving a Grief-Sensitive Schools Initiative grant to help create a bereavement support plan and encourage ongoing staff development in order to better support its grieving students, according to a news release.

The district said about one in 15 children in the U.S. will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the time they turn 18. Studies show unresolved grief can have a social and emotional impact on children. Research also shows that unresolved social and emotional impact can lead to children having behavioral issues and poor performance in school.

The district said educators often feel underprepared to help their students.
