Here are five things to do this weekend:
Beer choir: Gather for a night of singing with the Woodstock Beer Choir at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, at Holzlager Brewing Co., 150F S. Eastwood Drive. The beer choir director will lead everyone in a night of harmonies and provide song sheets. No experience needed. Frozen Gnome 50K: Watch runners or participate in the Frozen Gnome 50K, 10K and relay race starting at 7:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at Veteran Acres Park in Crystal Lake, 431 N. Walkup Ave. The challenging triple black diamond-rated course will take runners through a winter wonderland at Veteran Acres and Sterne’s Woods. Brew fest: Mackey’s Hideout in McHenry will host its annual Winter Brew Fest from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11. More than 10 breweries are expected to offer samples of more than 25 different beers with a focus on dark and winter beers. Tickets are $45 in advance and $60 the day of the event. This event is for adults ages 21 and older. Mackey’s Hideout is located at 2601 S. River Road, McHenry. Candlelight hike: Enjoy a candlelit hike through the Rush Creek Conservation Area trails from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11, in Harvard. If there’s enough snow, bring ski equipment and enjoy the trails by cross-country skiing. Skiers of all experiences are welcomed. No pets allowed. Spheres Bubble Show: See a unique and family-friendly show at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at the Woodstock Opera House, 121 Van Buren St. The one-hour show features giant formations of bubbles and foam that wafts over the audience with fog, music and lasers. The show’s creator, “America’s Got Talent” contestant and Guinness World Record holder Blaise Ryndes, describes it as a comedic and mysterious fusion of art, science and magic.
