The 2024 Lexus RX450h+ Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is a serious contender in the luxury SUV market, combining efficiency, performance, and Lexus’ hallmark touch for luxury.
For those who understand what range anxiety feels like when driving an all-electric vehicle, the PHEV is a wonderful middle-stage position. If you want fewer stops at the gas station but don’t want to fret over the next available public charging stop along your route, then the combo of gas-power and electric is ideal.
Design and comfort
Visually, the RX450h+ adheres to Lexus’ bold design language, with sharp angles, a prominent spindle grille, and sleek LED lighting. Some may find the design too aggressive, but it does make a distinct statement.
Inside, you get the luxury one expects from Lexus. The cabin is spacious and well-appointed, with high-quality materials like leather upholstery, soft-touch plastics and real wood trim. Front seats are heated and ventilated, providing comfort in all climates, and the rear seats offer ample legroom for adults.
Fold down the rear seats, and the RX450h expands for larger items. Overall, the cargo area is slightly smaller than non-hybrid models due to the battery placement, but I feel like it offers sufficient space for most family’s needs.
Performance and efficiency
The RX450h+ pairs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a hybrid system and an 18.1-kWh battery. Combined, this setup delivers 302 horsepower, which is sufficient for most driving situations, from highway merges to city stop-and-go traffic.
I found the electric motor to provide instant torque, while the transition between electric and gas power is impressively smooth. This is not the case for many PHEVs, but Lexus got it right.
In terms of range, the RX450h+ offers approximately 37 miles of all-electric driving, ideal for short commutes or errands around town. When the battery is depleted, the hybrid system takes over, providing a combined fuel economy rating of 35 mpg. For a vehicle of its size and luxury, these numbers are very competitive.
Charging the battery takes about 2.5 hours on a Level 2 charger, a reasonable timeframe for most PHEV owners. While this range and efficiency won’t rival full EVs, the plug-in hybrid system adds a layer of convenience for drivers not ready to go fully electric.
Tech and features
My RX450h+ tester featured Lexus’ latest infotainment system, featuring a 14-inch touchscreen with crisp graphics and intuitive controls. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are multiple USB-C ports to keep devices charged.
Advanced driver-assistance features are plentiful, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera system. These systems work seamlessly to enhance safety without being intrusive.
The final price of my tester, $76,505, includes options like a panoramic sunroof, a Mark Levinson premium audio system, and an adaptive air suspension that smooths out the ride on rough roads. While these features enhance the driving experience, they may not be on the “must-have” list for every buyer.
Final thoughts
The 2024 Lexus RX450h+ PHEV is an excellent choice for those seeking a luxurious, eco-conscious SUV with the flexibility of plug-in hybrid technology. It delivers comfort, technology and efficiency without sacrificing performance.
That said, the base price of $68,730 (and the fully loaded price of $76,505) position it in the premium segment. For buyers prioritizing efficiency and luxury, it’s a compelling option, but those who don’t need the plug-in hybrid capabilities might find better value in the standard RX models.
From my point, the RX450h+ impressed as a bridge between conventional and fully electric SUVs, offering the best of both worlds for discerning drivers, and Lexus’ unique level of luxury.
