Handsome Explorer Platinum delivers classy look, refined cabin feel

Ford offers 4x4 family hauler with 400-hp V6

The 2025 Ford Explorer Platinum 4x4 is a premium mid-size SUV.

The Ford Explorer has been a household name since 1991 when it helped launch the Sport Utility Vehicle into the stratosphere of popularity. Three decades later, it is still a sales powerhouse based on performance, reliability and price.

The 2025 Ford Explorer Platinum 4x4 is a premium offering in the mid-size SUV market, providing a blend of power, comfort and advanced technology. With the base Explorer starting at $36,145, and the Platinum trim priced from $58,325, there is something for everyone in the lineup.

Exterior design

My Platinum 4x4 tester was gorgeous in its Agate Black Metallic hue, featuring satin-aluminum accents, a distinct grille design, and optional 21-inch dark alloy aluminum wheels.

I especially liked the LED headlights and taillights with their modern, sharp aesthetic, while a hands-free power liftgate added appreciated practicality. Overall, the Explorer’s design leans toward conservative, upscale refinement while avoiding anything looking like off-road prowess.

Performance and handling

The Platinum 4x4 is a family hauler powered by a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, delivering 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain provides robust acceleration and smooth shifting. I had the chance to take it on a four-hour road trip and both driver and passengers were impressed with the ride and cabin comforts.

The 4x4 capability, enhanced by Ford’s Terrain Management System, makes it a competent choice for both daily commutes and off-road adventures. Seven drive modes, including options for sand, snow and sport, allow the driver to tailor performance to varying conditions.

The Explorer Platinum achieves an EPA-estimated 18 MPG city and 24 MPG highway, which is competitive for its class – but not a standout.

Cabin comfort

Inside, the Platinum trim justifies its price tag with an upscale cabin. This felt every bit Lincoln-quality, with quilted leather seats, a leather-wrapped dashboard, and real wood accents creating a sophisticated atmosphere. Seating quality is excellent, with solid bolstering and wide, accommodating bottoms.

Both front seats are heated, ventilated and equipped with power adjustments, ensuring long-distance comfort. Second-row captain’s chairs come standard, providing ample space and easy access to the third row, which can accommodate adults in a pinch but is better suited for children.

Cargo capacity is a strong point for the Explorer, offering 18.2 cubic feet behind the third row, 47.9 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a generous 87.8 cubic feet with both rear rows down. This versatility is ideal for families juggling school runs, grocery trips and weekend getaways. Our road trip had four adults with four suitcases, a large cooler and a set of golf clubs. That’s accommodating.

Impressive tech

On the Platinum trim, Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system is housed in a 10.1-inch vertical touchscreen. The system is intuitive, with crisp graphics and quick response times. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot and navigation. Personally, I enjoyed the 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, which featured crazy-clear and immersive sound quality.

Safety and driver-assistance technologies are robust, with Ford Co-Pilot360 included as standard. Key features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. The available Active Park Assist 2.0 can steer the vehicle into tight parking spaces with minimal driver input, adding special convenience while searching for parking in the city.

Summary

While my 2025 Ford Explorer Platinum 4x4 tester had a hefty price tag, it delivered a well-rounded package of performance, luxury and utility. The upscale interior, comprehensive tech suite, and versatile cargo space make it an excellent choice for families looking to up their social profile a bit.

While both fuel efficiency and conservative styling may be a downside, the Explorer Platinum caters to those who prioritize comfort and capability in equal measure. It’s a handsome SUV with a lot of upsides when facing off against the competition.
