Charles A. ‘Charlie’ Grover

LELAND — Charles A. “Charlie” Grover, 64, of Leland, suddenly passed away Thursday, April 5, in his home.

Charlie was born Sept. 8, 1953, in Aurora, the third of five children of Lester Enoch and Doris Jean (Hoffman) Grover. He graduated from Leland High School in 1971. He received his associate degree from Joliet Junior College and his bachelor’s degree in business agriculture from Illinois State University.

Charlie farmed on his family’s farm in Leland with his father for nearly 50 years. He was an active member of the community having served on the Leland Farmer’s Company Board for eight years, as president of the Adams Township Zoning Board for four years, and the Leland Lions Club for several years. He also served first as president and then as acting secretary treasurer of the Little Indian Creek Cemetery Board for 33 years until the time of his death.

Like his father before him, Charlie was a devoted supporter of the Sons of the American Legion for 11 years, having donated beef and organizing annual breakfasts for Legion fundraising.

He is survived by his wife, Karen; and three children, Brandon Grover, of Las Vegas, Nev., Alaina (Darby) Burke, of Princeton, and Christopher (Jenna) Grover, of Ottawa. He also has one granddaughter. Charlie is survived by his siblings, Pamela LaVoy, of Leland, Spencer (Susan) Grover, of Carmel, Ind., Linda (Dale) Richard, of Batavia, and Donna (Glenn) Gustafsson, of Bel Air, Md.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Doris Grover, of Leland; and his brother-in-law, Jack LaVoy, of Leland.

Private memorial services will be at a later date. A Celebration of Life will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 15, at C&M Canoe Rental, 3401 E. 2062nd Road, Ottawa, IL 61350.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Legion Post 570, P.O. Box 186, Leland, IL 60531, for veterans suffering from brain injury and/or PTSD.
