ANCONA — Elmer “Gene” Hamilton, 87, of Ancona, passed away Monday morning, April 23, at OSF St. James-John W. Albrecht Medical Center, Pontiac.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at Winterrowd Funeral Home, Streator. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Defenbaugh Cemetery with full military honors conducted by members of the Streator American Legion and VFW.

Serving as pallbearers will be Josh Foxhoven, James Carpenter, Marion Johnson, Gene McMullen, David Hamilton, Austin Cole and Rob Gass. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Berge, Curtis Elliott, Ryan Mueller, Herb and Harold Holz, Tom Kaminki, Butch Jacobs and Chris Cuchra.

Gene was born Dec. 13, 1930, in Pontiac, to Elmer and Wilma Hamilton. He married Janice Walters on Jan. 8, 1956. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Jeff (Paula) Hamilton, of Streator; granddaughters, Carleigh (Josh) Hamilton-Foxhoven and Whitney (James) Carpenter; and a brother, Dean (Mary) Hamilton, of Pontiac.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Richard, in infancy; and stepmother, Pearl Hamilton.

He attended Cornell Grade School and graduated from Cornell High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany.

Gene retired from farming, raising cattle and trucking. He was a member of the Streator Elks Lodge 591 and ran the bowling alley for many years at the Elks. He also was the Livingston County 4-H grounds superintendent.
