STREATOR — William H. (Bill) Schreiber, 97, of Streator, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home in Streator. Funeral services are being arranged for October.
William Herbert Schreiber was born in Chicago, Nov. 10, 1920. He was one of six children born to Jessebelle Alyard Vastine and Aloysius Mathias Schreiber. He graduated from Sullivan High School in 1939.
After working at several jobs during and after high school, he joined the U.S. Air Corps in 1942. He served in the USA and was transferred to Italy during World War II. Sergeant Schreiber was honorably discharged in 1945 after spending three years as an aircraft mechanic. On Sept. 8, 1945, he married Ruth Marie Carroll and they started a new life in Streator.
After working at other tire dealers, he started his own tire business in 1947 selling tires from his Monroe Street residence. In 1957, he built Schreiber Tire and Battery on East Main Street and built a house on Country Park Road in 1962.
He enjoyed playing golf and telling war stories and stories of his childhood during the depression. He was a lifelong ardent Catholic and always busy around the house after he retired.
Bill is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ruth; four sons, Tom (Caroll), Jim (Pam), Brian (Brenda) and Mike (Peggy); five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
