John A. 'Jack' Fitzgerald

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — John A. (Jack) Fitzgerald, 72, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, Dec. 27, peacefully at his home in Fort Lauderdale.

Celebration of Jack's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Fort Lauderdale.

Jack was born June 3, 1946, in Ottawa, to John W. and Marjorie Jean (Malcolm) Fitzgerald.

He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1964. He started his working career at Carson Pirie Scott in Ottawa then went on to study business at Midstate College in Peoria. He served in the U.S. Navy in 1967 and 1968. Jack earned a BA degree from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I.

He relocated to Fort Lauderdale in 1976 and worked at IBM Southeast Credit Union in Boca Raton, Fla. until his retirement in 2013. April 26, 2014, he married Wayne Boylan, his longtime partner of 25 years in Washington, D.C.

He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he served as their sexton. Jack was a devout Christian who truly loved the Lord.

Jack was a loving, caring person who always put the needs of others above his own. He loved the beach and loved to travel. In the past five years since his retirement, he was fortunate to visit Italy, Paris, Switzerland, Dubai, the Maldives, Alaska, go on safari in Africa and on many cruises throughout the Caribbean.

He will be heartfully missed by his family, friends and everyone who knew him and loved him.

He is survived by his spouse, Wayne, of Fort Lauderdale; his sister, Carol (Sam) Murry, of Ottawa; his brother, Dean (Mary) Fitzgerald, of Chicago; nephews, John Feehan and Matt Feehan of Ottawa, Robbie Fitzgerald, of Chicago; and a niece Amanda Fitzgerald, of Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
