Ladd man taken to hospital after crash with semi hauling corn

Corn spilled onto Route 71 in Mark

A 32-year-old Ladd man was taken to an area hospital for minor injuries, following a Monday morning crash on Route 71 in Mark.

At about 7:10 a.m. Monday, a white 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Thomas Hirkala, of Ladd, was traveling south on Mennie Lane, stopped at the intersection of Mennie Lane and Route 71, then proceeded to turn left to travel east on Route 71, according to Illinois State Police.

A black 1998 Kenworth truck-tractor with semi-trailer, operated by Terrence Chambers, 60, of Lostant, was traveling west on Route 71 when Hirkala's vehicle was struck by Chambers' truck-tractor, causing the truck-tractor with semi-trailer to overturn and spill its load of corn.

Hirkala received minor injuries and transported to an area hospital. A passenger in Hirkala's vehicle, Jamyson Wentz, 25, of Peru, refused treatment at the scene. Chambers also refused treatment at the scene.

Hirkala was cited on a complaint of failing to yield at a stop intersection. The scene was cleared at about 9:40 a.m.
