James W. Young, 76, of Streator passed away Friday, November 8, 2019 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday at the Park Presbyterian Church, Streator. Rev. Caleb Suydam will officiate.
Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until noon Wednesday at the Park Presbyterian Church, Streator.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Private family burial will be held at a later date in Sheridan Cemetery in Mt. Union, Iowa.
The Solon-Telford Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Born November 15, 1942 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa he was the son of Warren and Wilma (Krieger) Young. He married Kate Reutzel on February 1, 1964 in Mt. Union
He is survived by his wife Kate Young of Streator; a son, Tony Young of Tucson, Arizona; daughters, Angie (Karl) Shurtleff of Kingwood, Texas and Stephanie (Lionell) Hardy of Kingwood, Texas; 7 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a sister, Linda Young of West Burlington, Iowa and a brother, Thomas (Marilyn) Young of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and a foster sister, Sheryl Johnson.
Born and raised in Iowa, he attended Pleasant Lawn Grade School and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. He attended the University of Iowa on a football scholarship and transferred to Northeast Missouri State where he played football and graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Physical Education.
Jim was a football coach and taught physical education and driver education in Monroe and Cedar Rapids, Iowa before coming to Streator in 1974. He coached and taught at Streator High School from 1974 until 1983. While at Streator High School, he was the head Varsity Football Coach as well as coach of several other sports, teacher and Dean of Students. He also taught and coached at Marquette High School in Ottawa and taught in Country Club Hills, Illinois.
He later worked for Streator Coca Cola Bottling Company and owned and operated The Inn at Spring Brook in Seneca. He retired at the age of 60.
Jim loved golfing and enjoyed many sports activities over the years. He also enjoyed caring for his house and yard, traveling with his wife Kate and spending time with family and friends. In retirement, Jim and Kate split their time between Streator and Arizona.
He was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church, the Streator Country Club and the Views Golf Club in Oro Valley, Arizona.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Streatorland United Way, Park Presbyterian Church, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
