Utica village officials talk about projects at Donaldson Street to alleviate flooding

Officials figured out benchmark for flooding

Utica city officials said they learn something new from each round of flooding, and this spring's flood was no different.

Village President David Stewart said at last Wednesday's village meeting that, when river levels exceed 465 feet above sea level at the Starved Rock Lock and Dam, it's an indication the water will breach Donaldson Street.

Stewart said he had a conversation with the Army Corp of Engineers regarding ideas about how to curb flooding in the village, including projects at Donaldson Street.

HESCO baskets and an aqua barrier were noted, but Stewart said the village ultimately might have to look at raising the street.

Additionally, Stewart said Ameren will shut off power to any buildings that have floodwaters.

Despite this year's flood being the third highest in the village, the reported damage was relatively minor, according to city officials.

"We're fortunate it crested where it did," Stewart said.
