Michael Hermosillo signs minor-league contract with Chicago Cubs

'I grew up a Cubs fan so this one is definitely special and I’m ready to take advantage of it'

Michael Hermosillo is coming home.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman is reporting Hermosillo — a 2013 Ottawa High School graduate and two-time Times Baseball Player of the Year — has signed a minor-league deal to join the Chicago Cubs organization Wednesday morning. After playing his entire professional career in the Los Angeles Angels organization, Hermosillo was designated for assignment by the club back on Aug. 23 and reported to its alternate training site at Long Beach State University.

Hermosillo all but confirmed the move to the Cubs a half hour later by updating his Twitter profile picture to him wearing an electronically-added Cubs cap.

A few minutes later he posted: "Thank you to the @Angels for an amazing 7 years! Very grateful for the time I had over there. A lot of lifelong friends and memories made! Excited to get to work with the @Cubs! I grew up a Cubs fan so this one is definitely special and I'm ready to take advantage of it."

In seven games played last season, Hermosillo was 2-for-8 (.250) with a pair of RBIs and a stolen base.

In his major-league career, the outfielder batted 19-for-101 (.188) with six RBIs, one home run and three stolen bases. He also became known for his speed and glovework in the outfield, turning in multiple highlight-reel catches.
