Peru pool committee will not meet until after New Year

Group intends to give regular updates, host open meetings

Lifeguards use skim nets to clean the surface of the water of the pool at Washington Park in Peru in it's last year of operation in 2008.

The Peru municipal pool committee will not have its first meeting until after the new year.

Chairman Rick O’Sadnick gave an update Monday during the Public Service Committee meeting after Alderman Mike Sapienza asked what had transpired with the pool committee thus far.

The pool committee will focus on cost, location and design by looking at construction of a municipal pool from the ground up.

Sapienza said the process with building a police station in Peru was transparent.

“When we had that, we were very transparent with everything and every council meeting we had some kind of report on what was going on with the police station,” Sapienza said. “I’d like to have the same transparency with the pool committee.”

O’Sadnick said the committee hasn’t had its first meeting yet, but the members would give updates when available.

Mayor Ken Kolowski announced Nov. 25 he had chosen O’Sadnick, Alderman Andy Moreno, Parks and Recreation Director Adam Thorson and referendum originator Sherry Mayszak to be a part of the committee.

An advisory referendum passed in November, asking residents if the city should construct and operate a municipal swimming pool funded by the use of the hotel/motel tax.

O’Sadnick said there will be one more person added to the committee — making it five total. The committee is not “looking for a fifth person,” as that person is probably from Thorson’s park committee, he said.

“However, we will never turn away interested volunteers, or folks passionate about the pool. Yay or nay north or south … all are welcome,” he said. “Once we get started, all open pool committee meetings will be publicized and all will be encouraged to attend and make their voices and suggestions heard.”
