Wreaths Across America in Marseilles to honor fallen soldiers

Volunteers needed to decorate wreaths

A Wreath Across America ceremony will take place Saturday, Dec. 14, in Marseilles.

Saturday has been dedicated to national Wreaths Across America Day. The public of all ages are invited to attend a wreath laying ceremony at the Middle East Conflict Wall memorial in Marseilles. Local chapter wreaths across America spokesman David Raikes said a ceremonial program will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Pastor Colleen Lawrence, presenting opening prayers and remarks followed by the United States Marine Corps Honor Guard posting the colors. Remarks about a brief history will follow and a playing of taps by Glenn Bravanski.

Events similar to Marseilles will be taking place at the same time all across America and at the national cemeteries, including Arlington.

The motto is to remember the fallen, honor those who have served and teach the next generation the value of freedom.

Local volunteers from the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts will participate in the program. They will be showing up at 9 a.m. at the wall to prepare and decorate each wreath with flags of different branches of service. More than 100 people will be needed to prep. The effort is looking for more volunteers to help. They can be veterans, school-aged children, parents and adults to assist decorating wreaths.
