Fifty families and 120 children will be receiving gifts through Peru’s Blue and Red Christmas program this year.
Peru Police Chief Sarah Raymond, who coordinated the program, said Christmas is a great time to bring community members together, and the Blue and Red program does just that.
“Many community members are trying to find ways to give back, especially this time of year, and the Blue and Red Christmas for Kids program affords them that opportunity,” she said. “The citizens of Peru and the businesses within are incredible when it comes to this program.”
The Christmas program was established in 2013 by the Peru police and fire departments. It donates more than gifts to children in need; it provides personalized gifts for each child and family, including clothing and toys.
The department receives the names of children and families through the schools and the Head Start program.
Blue and Red has spent about $25,000 this year, and in addition to that, it has used many of the donated items (toys and clothing) from the community.
Raymond said there is no way the program could do what it does without the community.
“I can’t thank all of them enough for allowing this program to be the success that it is and helps us to continue to grow,” she said.
Blue and Red will be delivering gifts Friday, Dec. 20.
Anyone who is interested in donating to the program can make a check out to the Blue and Red Christmas for Kids or the Peru Police Department. The program accepts monetary donations, toys and clothes. Donations can be dropped off at the police department.
