The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation to ensure that festive gatherings don’t end in tragedy, the Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday news release.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High, Get a DUI” enforcement campaign will run through Jan. 2, with law enforcement agencies across Illinois adopting a zero-tolerance policy for impaired driving in an effort to keep the roads safe.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office also will be participating in Occupant Protection (seat belt) enforcement.

The La Salle County Sheriff’s Office urges everyone to take the following simple steps to prevent impaired driving; plan ahead; designate a sober driver; use public transportation or arrange for a ride-sharing service; check local options; utilize your community’s sober ride programs; report dangers.

If you spot an impaired driver, pull over safely and contact local law enforcement. Stop a friend from driving impaired by taking their keys and helping them get home safely, the sheriff’s office said. Buckle up, it’s your best defense against impaired drivers, the sheriff’s office also said.
