The Streator Family YMCA has been awarded a $1,000 community grant from the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation to support its Rock Steady Boxing to Fight Parkinson’s Disease program.

The program offers a non-contact, boxing-based fitness curriculum and is designed to help individuals living with Parkinson’s disease improve their strength, balance and overall quality of life.

“The program has seen incredible success with our participants,” executive director of the Streator YMCA Shannon Harback said in a news release. “Rock Steady empowers people of all abilities to fight back.”

The SRCCF grant will help make the program more accessible to those who may have limited financial means, allowing more community members to benefit from the therapeutic exercise.

“This life-changing program offers opportunities to regain independence, improve health and foster a sense of community for those who need it most,” Harback said. “We are grateful for the support of the Starved Rock Country Community Foundation.”
