Seneca 78, Earlville 26: At the Shipyard Showdown Tournament at Seneca, Fighting Irish senior guard Paxton Giertz scored a game-high 26 points, including the 2,000th of his career, in the top-seed’s win over the Red Raiders.

Seneca (10-2), which led 21-6 after one quarter and 42-16 at the half, also received 11 points from Brayden Simek, 10 from James Zydron and nine from Sebastian Deering.

Adam Waite led Earlville (2-10) with 13 points.

Flanagan-Cornell 62, Wethersfield 24: At the Shipyard Showdown Tournament at Seneca, the No. 4-seeded Falcons (9-2) led 22-8 after one, 39-12 at halftime and 59-19 heading to the fourth in the win over the Flying Geese.

Logan Ruddy poured in a game-high 25 points for F-C, with Connor Reed adding 18 points and Rudra Patel chipping in eight points.

Coal City 57, Somonauk 34: At the Shipyard Showdown Tournament at Seneca, the Bobcats (6-5) trailed the Coalers 15-7 after one, 30-11 at the intermission and 49-26 going to the fourth in the opening-round defeat.

Brock Sexton led Somonauk with eight points, while Weston Hannibal and Anthony Reynosa each posted five points.

Sandwich 56, Hinckley-Big Rock 53: In the consolation bracket of the 61st Plano Christmas Classic, the Indians’ Griffin Somlock nailed a game-winning 3-pointer with four seconds remaining in the win over the Royals.

Dom Rome scored 22 of his 24 points in the second half and grabbed eight rebounds for Sandwich (4-8), while Simeion Harris added 13 points.

Plano 72, Newark 47: In the consolation bracket of the 61st Plano Christmas Classic, the Norsemen trailed 17-6 after one and 36-20 at halftime in the loss to the host Reapers.

Dylan Long led Newark with a game-best 28 points, while Payton Wills added eight points and six rebounds.

North Lawndale 42, Fieldcrest 40: At Normal West, the Knights fell on a last second shot by the Phoenix in the State Farm Classic.

Ed Lorton and Layten Gerdes each had 10 points for Fieldcrest.

Amboy 59, Leland 55 (OT): At the 3rd Annual LaMoille Holiday Classic, the Panthers fell in extra time to the Clippers.

Girls basketball

Marquette 54, Newman 42: At the Amboy Holiday Tournament, the Crusaders opened the tournament with a win over the Comets.

Kaitlyn Davis (five rebounds, five steals) and Hunter Hopkins (eight rebounds) each scored 19 points to lead Marquette.

Seneca 58, Walther Christian 18: At the Lisle Holiday Cage Classic, the Fighting Irish (10-3) led the Broncos 35-17 at halftime in opening the tournament with a win.

Alyssa Zellers led Seneca with a game-high 22 points, with Audry McNabb adding nine points and Graysen Provance seven points.

Henry-Senachwine 43, Earlville 21: At the Earlville Holiday Tournament, the Red Raiders dropped their opening round game to the Mallards.

Earlville was led by Elizabeth Vazquez’s six points and two steals and Audrey Scherer’s three points and 13 rebounds.

Flanagan-Cornell 59, Somonauk/Leland 40: At Earlville Holiday Tournament, the Falcons' Ella Derossett scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win.

S/L was led by Kiley Mason (17 points), Abby Hohmann (eight points, seven rebounds), Ashley McCoy (six points) and Macey Kinney (six points).

Fieldcrest 57, Serena 51; Fieldcrest 64, Brimfield 57: At the St. Bede Lady Bruin Christmas Classic, the Knights (8-5) opened pool play with wins over the Huskers and Indians.

Macy Gochanour had 24 points and TeriLynn Timmerman 14 in the win over Serena, which received 24 points from Jenna Setchell.

Gochanour then popped in 36 points against Brimfield, with Timmerman adding 14 and Pru Mangan 10.
