The Streator City Council approved on Wednesday no parking ordinances for Bronson and East Stanton streets as a measure to improve traffic flow on those roadways.
The first ordinance eliminates parking on the south side of Bronson Street from North Bloomington to North Shabbona streets.
Streator City Engineer Jeremy Palm said Bronson Street is a curbed truck route with no dedicated parking lane, but recently in the 500 and 600 blocks, vehicles parking on both sides of the street have become a problem.
Palm said this poses a problem for drivers and street maintenance crews, especially snow plows in the winter.
With many of the houses along Bronson located on the north side, it makes the south an ideal side for a no parking zone.
The council also approved a no parking ordinance for East Stanton Street, where parking has become a problem since the street’s reconstruction in 2012, according to Palm.
This ordinance will eliminate parking on the south side of East Stanton Street, from North Park Street to North Shabbona Street.
Palm said although there are parking lanes on the north side of the street, vehicles have been parking in areas without designated parking spaces.
Councilman David Reed said he drove down both streets on Wednesday afternoon and agrees that something should be done.
“I drove both Bronson and Stanton streets today, and I can imagine how difficult it could be for a semi or fire truck to pass through with cars parked on both sides,” Reed said. “I can see how this has become an issue.”
All members but one of the council members voted in favor of the proposals, with Councilman David “Moose” Conner voting against it.
