Hall girls split games at Byron MLK Shootout: Saturday BCR roundup

The Hall Red Devils split their first round games of the Byron MLK Shootout on Saturday, defeating Machesney Park Harlem 55-44 while losing to Class 1A ranked Rockford Lutheran 68-54.

The Red Devils will return to Byron on Monday to face host Byron, coached by Hall alum Eric Yerly, and Galena.

Hall 55, Machesney Park Harlem 44: The Red Devils held the Huskers to 15 points in second half to close out their opener. Ella Sterling led Hall with 17 points with Charlie Pellegrini adding 12, Kennedy Wozniak 11 and Caroline Morris 10.

Rockford Lutheran 68, Hall 54: The Crusaders held off the Red Devils by making 15 of 16 free throw attempts.

The Red Devils placed four in double figures with Sterling (14), Pellegrini (12), Morris (11) and Natalia Zamora (10).

Bureau Valley 52, West Central 41: The Storm put the heat on in the middle quarters, outscoring the West Central 36-11, and knocked down 12 3-pointers on the way to a win at Biggsville on Saturday.

The Storm had balanced scoring with Emma Mussche and Brooke Helms with nine points each, Bella Birkey with eight, Libby Endress with seven and Kadyn Haage with six.

St. Bede 46, Dwight 39: The Bruins opened the Tri-County Conference Tournament with their second straight win over the Trojans.

Quinn McClain led the Bruins’ balanced attack with 10 points, Bailey Engels had nine, Lili McClain eight, and Ashlyn Ehm seven.

The Bruins (13-9) will face No. 1 seed Seneca at 5:30 p.m. Monday back in Roanoke.

Boys basketball

Bloomington Central Catholic 74, Princeton 57: The Tigers fell to the host Saints in the first day of the BCC MLK Shootout. They’ll return to Bloomington on Monday to face Tolono Unity at 10:30 a.m.

Midland 54, LaMoille 49: Tyler Billhorn had 21 points with 10 rebounds, but it was enough for the Lions, who dropped a nonconference game to the Timberwolves at the Lions Den.

Hall 55, Serena 45: The Red Devils won a nonconference game on the road.

Wrestling

At Princeton: The Tigers split a pair of dual matches on the home mats Saturday morning, defeating Dakota 63-16 while falling to Coal City 54-17.

At Kewanee: St. Bede sent six wrestlers to the podium on the way to a fifth-place finish at the Kewanee Invitational.

Place-finishers for St. Bede were Michael Benge (113 pounds), Max Moreno (126) and Garrett Connelly (190), who took third, Jameson Daley (106) and Grady Gillan (215), who finished fourth, and Jack Maschmann (175) was fifth.

The host Boilermakers won with 237.5 points with St. Bede (120) fifth and Putnam County-Hall (28) 15th.
