Police cite man walking Streator neighborhood with a gun without valid concealed carry license

Officers say they received several calls after midnight

Streator police closed a block of Hickory Street near the Streator Post Office on Saturday, June 17, 2023, while bomb technicians removed a suspicious tote in the parking lot.

A Streator man was cited Saturday after police said they found a firearm on him during a search.

Ty McCormick, 30, was cited on complaints of unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of cannabis, then released from custody with a court date.

According to Streator police, officers responded to multiple calls just after midnight. Initially, police were notified of a “man with a gun” walking around Lowden Road. While conducting a search in the area, another call reported an unknown man “pounding on their door” in the 300 block of West Grant Street.

Streator police said they located a man on West Grant Street who matched the description from the latest call.

Officers approached the suspect, later identified as McCormick, and ordered him to remove his hands from his pockets, according to police. Authorities said he appeared intoxicated and had difficulty maintaining his balance.

McCormick admitted to having a firearm in his pocket and a search found a loaded .22 caliber handgun on him, according to police. While McCormick was found to have an active Firearm Owners Identification card, he did not have a concealed carry license, police said.

A small amount of suspected marijuana was found on McCormick, police said.

The firearm, ammunition and marijuana were seized and inventoried, police said.
