Seneca wrestling coach wins 400th dual; Woodland senior scores 1,000th career point

Boys basketball

Woodland 60, St. Bede 38: At the 98th Tri-County Conference Tournament in Granville, the Warriors roared out to a 17-1 lead after the opening quarter against the Bruins, and with the win advanced to Friday’s 5 p.m. consolation championship game against Dwight.

Nolan Price scored a game-high 22 points, including hitting six 3-pointers to lead Woodland. Connor Dodge added 13 points and Nick Plesko eight points, including his 1,000th career point — the 11th player to reach the mark in program history and second this month, after classmate Dodge.

Girls basketball

Marquette 66, Midland 44: At Bader Gymnasium, the Crusaders (18-9, 9-3) ran past the Timberwolves in the Tri-County Conference win.

Marquette was led by Kaitlyn Davis (23 points), Keely Nelson (11 points, six rebounds), Hunter Hopkins (10 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds) and Kelsey Cuchra (eight points, 11 rebounds).

Peotone 55, Streator 35: At Peotone, the Bulldogs fell behind 22-4 after the opening quarter in the Illinois Central Eight Conference loss to the Blue Devils.

Streator (1-24, 0-11) was led by 14 points and 13 rebounds from Leah Krohe, while Ava Gwaltney added 12 points and Rhea Huey six points.

Roanoke-Benson 47, Seneca 37: At Seneca, the Fighting Irish were outscored 18-4 in the third quarter in the TCC loss to the Rockets.

Seneca (18-7, 9-3) was led by Alyssa Zellers (14 points), Graysen Provance (10 points) and Audry McNabb (six points).

Serena 54, Hiawatha 11: At Serena, the Huskers improved to 20-5 overall and 5-0 in Little Ten Conference play with the big win over the Hawks.

Jenna Setchell led Serena with 10 points, three rebounds, two steals and three assists. Parker Twait added eight points, four rebounds and three steals, while Macy Mahler (five rebounds, four assists, three steals) and Anna Hjerpe each scored seven points.

Somonauk/Leland 48, Earlville 29: At Somonauk, the Bobcats shot 44% from the field and used a “solid performance from the team tonight with great energy on both sides of the ball,” according to coach Jason Zaleski in the LTC victory over the Red Raiders.

Kiley Mason led the Bobcats with 19 points, with Abby Hohmann adding nine points and seven steals, and Macey Kinney and Aubrey Chiavario chipping in eight and six points, respectively.

Earlville was led by Addie Scherer (nine points, six rebounds) and Audrey Scherer (seven points, seven rebounds).

Indian Creek 58, Newark 38: At Newark, the Norsemen led 16-14 after one, but the visitors used a 22-5 second quarter to take control in the LTC contest.

El Paso-Gridley 68, Fieldcrest 52: At El Paso, the Knights fell to 13-11 overall and 6-4 in Heart of Illinois Conference action with the loss to the rival Titans.

Macy Gochanour poured in 29 points to led Fieldcrest, with TeriLynn Timmerman adding 11 and Pru Mangan eight.

Boys wrestling

Seneca 50, Wheaton Academy 30; Seneca 80, Ottawa 0: At Seneca, the Irish posted senior-night wins over the Warriors and Pirates, the latter triumph giving head coach Todd Yegge his 400th career dual win.

Double on-mat winners for Seneca (22-4) included Raiden Terry (113 pounds), Wyatt Coop (120), Ryker Terry (132), Chase Rod (150, 157), Ryan Flynn (150, 157), Landon Venecia (190) and Jeremy Gagnon (285).

Winning single bouts for the hosts were Landon Hebel (126), Avery Terry (138), Avery Phillips (144), Devon Daemicke (144), Ryan Flynn (157), Nick Grant (165), Alex Gagnon (175) and Colton Angeloff (215).
