The Streator Chamber of Commerce named the Streator Public Library its Business of the Month for January 2025.

Founded in 1870, the library has been a part of the Streator’s downtown for more than 150 years.

The library’s first location was a room above the Streator National Bank and started as a small collection of books donated by the wives of local businessmen.

As the collection grew, so did the need for more space.

In 1901, with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation and a donation from Mayor Col. Plumb, the city acquired the property of the First Congregational Church on the corner of Park and Bridge streets.

The library, which still stands there today, was dedicated in 1903.

Now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, it serves as a resource for Streator residents of all ages, providing books, fundraiser events, educational/history presentations and employment services.

The Streator Chamber of Commerce commended the library for its investment and ongoing efforts to help the community.
