Three Princeton wrestlers win in Iowa: Saturday’s NewsTribune roundup

WRESTLING

At Dewitt, Iowa: Princeton had three champions at the Saber Invitational as Cade Odell won the 285-pound bracket, Casey Etheridge took first at 165 and Kane Dauber was the winner at 132.

Odell won by fall in 42 seconds in his first match, then won by 4-1 decision in the semifinals before winning the title match 10-3.

Etheridge won by technical fall (17-1) in his opener, won 12-10 in the semifinal and claimed the title with a 7-3 decision in the final.

Dauber won by pin in 1:33 in his first match, recorded a tech fall (18-2) in his second and won by 8-6 decision in the title match.

Also for the Tigers, Ace Christiansen (144) placed second, Ian Morris (215) took third and Allister Swanson (120) and Brayden Bickett (106) each finished sixth.

Princeton placed fourth as a team.

At Springfield: La Salle-Peru had four placers at Lanphier’s Joe Bee Invitational.

Reegan Kellett was the top Cavalier finisher as he placed third at 138 pounds. He won by fall in 5:29 in the third-place match.

Austin Herron (120) and Caleb Plut (150) each placed fifth, while Zach Pocivasek (157) took sixth.

At Metamora: In the Metamora Holiday Classic, the Putnam County-Hall girls had a pair of placers.

Ella Irwin finished second at 235 pounds, while Bailey Herr took third at 190.

At Stillman Valley: Mendota senior Angil Serrano placed second in the 285-pound bracket in the Stillman Valley Holiday Tournament.

Also for the Trojans, Gavin Evans took fifth at 157.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

At Ottawa: Princeton placed fourth in the Ottawa Holiday Tournament with a 50-44 loss to Metamora in the third-place game.

Camryn Driscoll scored 14 points for the Tigresses (9-4), while Keighley Davis added 13.

In the semifinals, the Tigresses lost 51-22 to the host Pirates.

Makayla Hecht and Payton Brandt each scored seven points for Princeton

La Salle-Peru placed seventh, beating Plainfield Central 57-21 in the seventh-place game.

Brie Ruppert led the way with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Phoebe Shetterly had 12 points, six rebounds and five steals and Kelsey Frederick added 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

In the silver bracket semifinals, Ruppert had 14 points and 12 rebounds in a 43-33 loss to IVC.

Bureau Valley 52, Mendota 42: Libby Endress scored 18 points to lead the Storm to a nonconference victory at Mendota.

Bella Birkey added 10 points for BV.

For Mendota, Ella Martin had 11 points, eight steals, eight rebounds and three assists, while Kennedy Knaff contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

BOYS SWIMMING

At Sterling: Jonathan Neu won two events to help the La Salle-Peru co-op place third in the Sterling Invite.

Neu won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.42 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.99 seconds.

L-P’s Vince Wargo, Caleb Strand, Henry Pinter and Beckham Baker placed third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:56.59), while Neu, Brian Lowery, Wargo and Kaiden Lemke took third in the 200 medley relay (1:59.94).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Orion 76, Bureau Valley 49: Bryce Helms and Landen Birdsley scored 11 points each as the Storm lost a nonconference game in Orion.

Landon Hulsing added nine points for BV.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Danville Area 79, IVCC 55: Hunter Staton scored 21 points as the Eagles lost in Danville.

Roko Jurasovic added nine points and eight rebounds for IVCC (6-10).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Danville Area 107, IVCC 36: Neveah Sansone scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Eagles lost in Danville.

Jasmine Garmine added eight points for IVCC (2-10).
