Behind a pair of individual regional champions, the Seneca wrestling team captured the first team regional title in program history Sunday at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Class 1A Yorkville Christian Regional.
Seneca racked up 191 points to edge Yorkville Christian (190.5).
All 14 Fighting Irish wrestlers placed in the top six to advance to the Sandwich Sectional.
Gavin Robertson secured the title for the Fighting Irish as he defeated St. Bede’s Ethan Fleming by 11-7 decision with a late third period throw in the championship match.
Owen Feiner also won his bracket for Seneca, pinning St. Bede’s Dominic Bima in the 126 final.
Jaden Casey (113) and Asher Hamby (138) each placed second, while Luke Sangston (106), Maveric Varland (220) and Nathan Elliott (285) each finished third.
In their third-place matches, Sangson beat Somonauk’s Shea Reisel by fall, Varland pinned Plano’s Alfonso Hernandez and Elliott defeated Putnam County-Hall’s John Davis by 11-8 decision.
Also advancing for the Irish were Chris Peura (fourth at 170), Nate Othon (fifth at 120), Wilson Widman (fifth at 132), Collin Wright (fifth at 145), Isaac Marques (fifth at 160), Will Milton (sixth at 152) and Kyle Hamby (sixth at 195).
Reisel, who placed fourth at 106), was the only advancer for Somonauk, which finished 16th with 10 points.
At Peoria
Three Ottawa wrestlers claimed championships at the IWCOA Class 2A Peoria Central Regional on Sunday.
The Pirates scored 189 points to place third behind Joliet Catholic (211) and Washington (197.5).
Tristan Simmons (120 pounds), Marek Duffy (160) and Charles Medrow (182) each claimed titles.
In their championship matches, Simmons beat Washington’s Eli Gonzalez by 7-5 decision, Duffy pinned Limestone’s Peyton Williams and Medrow defeated Joliet Catholic’s Aiden Watkins by 10-7 decision.
Grason Johnson (126), Tristan Wheeler (138) and Tate Spicer (170) each placed second for the Pirates, Wyatt Reding (152) and LaMarcus Petty (220) and Xander Jones (132) took fourth.
The nine Ottawa wrestlers advance to the Geneseo Sectional.
Streator had no advancers.
At Sandwich
Evan Reilly remained undefeated by claiming the 126-pound title at the IWCOA Class 1A Sandwich Regional on Sunday.
Reilly defeated Princeton’s Matthew Harris by 8-6 decision in the title match.
Reilly’s performance helped Sandwich tie for third as a team with 120 points with Oregon. Lena-Winslow won with 195.5 followed by Dakota (146).
Aidan Linden (145) and Alex Alfaro (170) each placed third for Sandwich. In their third-place matches, Linden beat Rockridge’s Reese Finch 6-2, while Alfaro pinned Fulton’s Zane Pannell.
Also advancing to the Sandwich Sectional for the Indians are Connor Holly (fourth at 182), Nolan Bobee (fifth at 138), Kaiden Gustafson (fifth at 195), Kaidin Kern (sixth at 113) and Seven Tornga (sixth at 160).
