The La Salle County Republicans are hosting “A Rally for Representation” from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Washington Square in Ottawa.
Their aim is to let U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, know their thoughts on his recent criticism of former President Donald Trump. The group said Kinzinger has not met nor communicated with the La Salle County Republican Central Committee, despite invitations to do so.
Kinzinger was one of 10 Republicans in the House to vote in favor to impeach Trump. He also said he was in favor of invoking the 25th Amendment before the impeachment vote and said he regretted voting for Trump on Election Day.
The congressman has been critical of Trump’s failure to accept election results and has said Trump’s actions led to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
According to a news release issued by the La Salle County Republican Central Committee, “Rep. Kinzinger’s remarks have reached a level of disconnect and inappropriateness that we, as his fellow Republicans and constituents, can no longer remain silent. It is past time that we send a clear message that his actions and comments do not represent a significant portion of his constituents and the majority of the La Salle County Republican Central Committee.”
Kinzinger has been invited to Saturday’s event, the county’s GOP said. Organizers also said the rally will be a peaceful, respectful dialogue with the congressman.
“The congressman, along with his team, has enjoyed a long relationship with the local party leaders,” said Maura Gillespie, communications director for the congressman. “Congressman Kinzinger looks forward to building on that solid foundation as they work together to navigate these next four years under a Democrat majority and through the course of this pandemic, keeping the focus on serving the community and the shared interests of the party.”
Those who attend are asked to bring American flags and/or signs. Organizers also said there will be speakers.
