South Side fire station in Ottawa reopens

Station was closed for a month after asbestos was discovered by contractors

As of 2 p.m. Thursday, the Ottawa Fire Department’s Station #2 at 1301 State St. reopened.

Firefighters have moved in and will be responding again from Station #2.

The station was closed early last month after contractors discovered asbestos while the living quarters were being retiled. The Ottawa Fire Department worked with city officials to remove the asbestos.

The south station houses one ambulance and one fire engine. These are staffed by one or two firefighters and a lieutenant. It’s known as a jump company because the personnel switch vehicles depending on the nature of the call.
