Judge Cantlin announces campaign to retain circuit court judge’s seat

Cantlin was appointed to succeed Eugene P. Daugherity in March

Judge Christina Cantlin announced Wednesday she will be running for judge in the 13th Judicial Circuit at a gathering at Monte’s Riverside Inn in Ottawa.

After more than 20 years serving the Ottawa community as a civil and municipal attorney, Cantlin was appointed to the judiciary in March and now seeks the Democratic nomination to retain the seat. She was appointed La Salle County circuit judge, succeeding Eugene P. Daugherity, now an appellate justice.

“Serving as a circuit judge allows me to combine my passion for helping people and my love of the law,” Cantlin said in a press release. “I hope voters recognize my commitment to the community and the work I’ve done to ensure justice for all, especially those who don’t always have a voice.

“It’s a privilege to serve as a judge for the citizens of La Salle, Grundy and Bureau counties. It’s a great responsibility and I hope to honor the legacy of those public servants who came before me,” she added.

Cantlin will run for election in November 2022 across the three-county circuit (La Salle, Bureau and Grundy). If elected, she would serve a six-year term and run for retention thereafter.

Cantlin is the second woman to have served as a circuit judge of the 13th Circuit, joining Cynthia M. Raccuglia, who was named to the bench in 1991. (However, two women, Karen C. Eiten and Michelle A. Vescogni, serve as associate judges.)

Cantlin is a mother of five, a former board member of OSF HealthCare, First National Bank and Easter Seals of Ottawa. Prior to being appointed judge, she was a partner at The Cantlin Law Firm and served as Ottawa’s city attorney for seven years.
