Streator City Council gives OK to facade grant at State Farm Insurance building

Work will start as soon as weather warms

Owner Chad Lucas requested a facade grant for the west facade of the building at 201 N. Bloomington St., which houses State Farm Insurance.

Work is expected to begin on the facade of the State Farm Insurance building at 201 N. Bloomington St. in Streator as soon as the weather warms, said City Engineer Jeremy Palm, after the City Council approved a facade grant for the building Wednesday.

The Plan Commission recommended the $15,000 request. The City Council budgeted money for one facade grant this year.

Owner Chad Lucas is proposing demolition of the west facing facade of the building, including the shingled awning; replacement of all west facing windows; installation of new limestone sills on the lower facade of windows to match the upper facade windows; installation of a new storefront door in the center of the facade; refinishing of the north and south doors of the west facade; and tuckpointing of the entire facade including the area exposed by the removal of the shingled awning.

The total cost of the building renovations are expected to be about $65,000, Lucas said. The city’s grant would cover 23% of the overall project.
