Nearly 50 residents treated at the scene of Fornof Manor fire in Streator; no injuries reported

Firefighters helped some residents by carrying them down stairs, no one needed transfer to a hospital

Several firefighters from local departments around the Streator area responded to a fire Friday morning at Fornof Manor in Streator. A first floor fire was extinguished on the seven-floor building.

Fornof Manor residents in Streator were treated on site Friday morning after a fire was extinguished on the first floor of the seven-floor residential building.

Streator Fire Chief Gary Bird said no residents required transportation to the hospital and anyone bothered by smoke from the fire were treated by Advanced Medical Transport on the building’s ground floor.

Firefighters responded about midnight to the building at 606 E. Morrell St. and extinguished the fire inside of the apartments within 5 minutes.

The fire produced smoke that entered other floors of the high rise. EMS units were called to set up triage and treat residents. Nearly 50 residents were evaluated by EMS units, with AMT being assisted by Ottawa, Lostant and Marseilles crews. Streator firefighters and crews had to assist some of these residents by carrying them down stairs.

The fire was determined to be accidental after an investigation by Streator Fire Department.

One apartment was deemed uninhabitable because of the fire and smoke damage. The remainder of the first floor had smoke damage with the no harm to the apartments. The alarm system was credited for preventing damage in the building.

Streator firefighters were assisted on scene by Grand Ridge, Allen Township, Lostant, Long Point and Reading, among other responders. Vermilion Valley Dispatch, Nicor and Illinois American Water also assisted firefighters at the scene.
