Michael Hermosillo returned to the Iowa Cubs lineup last week after missing 18 days with a hamstring injury.
He definitely didn’t show any signs of rust at the plate.
The 2013 Ottawa High School graduate and two-time The Times Baseball Player of the Year was 2 for 6 in games Friday and Sunday against the host Omaha Storm Chasers with a double and an RBI, lifting his season batting average with the Triple-A Cubs to .310.
Hermosillo has 10 home runs, 29 runs batted in, a 1.048 on-base-plus-slugging percentage and has seven stolen bases in 10 attempts this season for Iowa.
After serving as the team’s DH earlier in the week, Hermosillo returned to the field Friday as the I-Cubs center fielder, then was in the lineup as the team’s designated hitter Sunday. He had Saturday off.
Hermosillo was placed on the injured list July 23 with a hamstring ailment.
The Iowa Cubs are currently 39-49 and in sixth place in the Triple A East Midwest Division heading into a seven-game – including a resumption of a suspended game– series visiting the St. Paul (Minn.) Saints.
The Chicago Cubs currently are 52-68 and in fourth place in the National League Central, and are in the midst of an 11-game losing streak heading into Monday night’s game at Cincinnati. The Chicago Cubs starting outfield in Sunday’s loss consisted of leadoff man Rafael Ortega (.327 batting average this season), Ian Happ (.176) and Jason Heyward (.198).
