Garbage truck fire shuts down Route 120 for several hours

No one was injured in the incident

A garbage truck fire shut down Route 120 south of Wonder Lake for several hours Tuesday afternoon, according to the Woodstock Fire/Rescue District.

At 11:05 a.m., firefighters responded to a vehicle fire in the westbound lanes of Route 120 and found a garbage truck fully engulfed in flames when they arrived, according to a news release.

The driver had already safely exited the vehicle and was not injured.

It took firefighters over a half hour to get the fire under control because it was a large commercial vehicle and had several hidden fires inside, according to the release.

Water and foam was used to put out the fire. Because the truck was filled with trash, heavy equipment had to be called in to remove the trash and allow firefighters to put out the rest of the fire.

The driver of the truck thinks hydraulic line ruptured, sparking the fire, according to the release. The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District is still investigating.

Firefighters from Wonder Lake also assisted, while police from Bull Valley and the McHenry Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control and shutting down Route 120 between Thompson Road and Ridge Road.
